Pay for a $50,000 Watch in Dollars. Settle It in 3 Seconds.

You hold stablecoins. The escrow needs XRP. Meridian converts one to the other at checkout, on-chain, without ever touching your funds. Here is how stablecoin payments work.

Picture this. A collector in Singapore finds a $50,000 Patek Philippe on Meridian. She holds RLUSD, not XRP. Five months ago, she would have needed to convert manually, fund the escrow herself, and hope the math worked out.

Now she selects RLUSD at checkout, confirms a live quote, and signs one transaction. The stablecoin converts to XRP on-chain. The escrow locks automatically. Settlement: 3.2 seconds. Meridian never touches her money.

The Constraint

XRPL escrow accepts only XRP. There is no token escrow primitive on the ledger. That is a hard constraint when your buyers hold stablecoins.

The custodial shortcut is obvious: hold the RLUSD on a platform wallet, convert it, fund the escrow. But custody is the exact problem Meridian exists to eliminate. Your funds never sit in our wallet. Not for one second.

Convert First, Escrow Second

The XRP Ledger has a built-in decentralized exchange. Every issued currency trades against XRP through on-chain order books. Meridian uses this DEX to convert RLUSD to XRP at the moment of purchase.

The Checkout Flow

  • You select RLUSD at checkout. Meridian queries the XRPL DEX order book for a live quote.
  • You see the exact exchange rate, XRP amount, and a 30-second countdown to confirm.
  • You sign an OfferCreate transaction in your own wallet. RLUSD swaps for XRP on-chain.
  • The converted XRP funds an EscrowCreate with crypto-conditions. Standard Meridian escrow from here.
  • After delivery, the seller receives XRP. If they prefer dollars, one click converts it back to RLUSD.

Every transaction is signed in your wallet. Meridian never holds, routes, or intermediates the funds.

Why convert before escrow, not after: The escrow holds native XRP. If a dispute arises, the resolution mechanism works identically to any XRP purchase. One escrow path. Zero special cases.

Price Protection

DEX rates move. A stale quote means you overpay. Meridian enforces tight guardrails on every conversion.

  • The quote reflects the mid-market rate from the live XRPL order book.
  • A 30-second window gives you time to review. If it expires, the quote refreshes automatically.
  • A 1% slippage ceiling protects every OfferCreate. If the market moves beyond 1%, the transaction fails and you get a fresh quote.
  • Order book depth is analyzed before quoting. If liquidity is too thin for your trade size, Meridian warns you before confirmation.

No front-running. No surprise slippage. Full visibility into the conversion before you sign.

One-Click Trustline

RLUSD is an issued currency on XRPL. Holding it requires a trustline to the issuer. Many collectors have never set one up.

Meridian detects whether your wallet has an RLUSD trustline. If not, one click creates it. You sign a TrustSet transaction in your wallet. All five supported wallets work: Xaman, GemWallet, Crossmark, Joey, and WalletConnect.

After Settlement

Sellers set a currency preference in their profile: XRP, RLUSD, or both. A seller who prefers RLUSD sees a one-click conversion button on their transaction receipt after escrow releases.

Refunded buyers get the same option. If a dispute resolves in your favor, you receive XRP from the cancelled escrow. One click converts it back to RLUSD.

What the Data Shows

  • RLUSD/XRP liquidity on the XRPL DEX is growing but still thin for large orders. Partial fills are handled with clear messaging.
  • One-click trustline setup cut the drop-off rate for first-time RLUSD holders significantly.
  • The 30-second quote window balances urgency against stale pricing. Shorter windows cause anxiety. Longer ones drift.
  • Post-settlement conversion is optional. Many sellers prefer to hold XRP. Meridian does not force either direction.
About RLUSD: Launched December 2024 on both XRPL and Ethereum. Fully backed by USD deposits, U.S. Treasury bills, and cash equivalents. Regulated under the New York Department of Financial Services. (Source: ripple.com/rlusd)

Stablecoin payments were the most requested feature on our testnet. They preserve everything that matters: non-custodial escrow, your signature on every transaction, and zero platform custody. Pay in the currency you hold. Settle in seconds.
